One of the most epic marketing failures in recent history occurred because of lack of vision. Ironically, the shortsighted brand was none other than Eastman Kodak Company.  

At its peak, Kodak boasted a 90% share of the US film market. Yet, when it came time to transition to the digital age, they dug in their heels and remained in the dark room, so to speak.

Despite increasing demand for digital, Kodak focused on continuing to market film and film products, mistakenly believing the power of their brand could overcome the demand for digital. The result? Competitors Sony and Canon watched profits for their digital cameras soar, while Kodak saw their market share plummet.

Kodak had invented the first digital camera in 1975, so their mistake wasn’t ignoring the advance of technology, but instead, the result of focusing on selling product instead satisfying customers. Had Kodak seen the big picture—that their business was not about selling film, but about helping customers easily capture memories—the outcome would have been different.
